Prepare Maine

Remodeling education for a stronger economy, better jobs and a brighter future

The Prepare Maine initiative for excellence in education will help Mainers build a more effective educational system, one that gives all of us the knowledge and skills we need to meet future challenges.

The Maine Coalition for Excellence in Education launched this initiative to bring education back to the center of Maine’s economic development strategy.

Over the last decade, Maine’s decreased focus on education has led to our schools falling in the national rankings.  We rank last in New England in college attainment and providing our workers with the knowledge and skills they need, and that’s why we have the lowest incomes in New England.

Our educational system, like most around the country, was designed for another era. It’s time to remodel that system for the 21st century, strengthening what’s working and fixing what’s not.

To do this, we need everyone’s participation—teachers, students, families, businesses, school boards and administrators, taxpayers, policymakers—working together like a well-tuned orchestra.  We need to organize ourselves to play the new music that a complex global world has handed us.

Mobilizing Mainers for Educational Opportunity

To achieve our vision, we will:

1.
Educate:

Make issues understandable and move people to action

2.
Organize:

Build an “early childhood through lifelong learning” advocacy network at the state and local levels, with students, parents and businesses engaging officials with innovative events. Join our network.

3.
Mobilize:

Give Mainers the tools and information they need to take action and demand educational quality, opportunity and success for everyone.

4.
Achieve:

Promote and enact best practices and smart policies that will prepare this and future generations of Mainers for higher education, modern careers and adult life.
